Dream queen hosta size question

last modified: 11 years ago

Just picked up 2. They are in 2.5 quart pots, one with 2
eyes and the other with one. I’m not sure why I succumbed, except I like anything with a light center.

I checked the hosta library, but didn’t see anything about
what dimensions to expect: height, width, leaf size, and growth rate. And how would you describe
the form? Mounded, upright, etc.?

Is there a better place to find this info? Thanks.

There are 5 photos of Dream Queen in the Hosta Library, and you would be hard pressed to determine the correct color. The photos are taken in different lighting. I'm often confused as to the coloring when selecting a hosta. For what it's worth - here is mine and I think the color is accurate. It is going into its third year, but was set back when I transplanted it in better soil. It will definitely be large.

The Hosta Library's data base sometimes shows immature dimensions or only L,M which does not mean enough, so I look at http://www.mickfieldhostas.co.uk/d.htm and find their own mature dimensions for 'Dream Queen' :

    plant size : 22" tall x 48" wide.

    leaf size : 10" x 8"

You know, Ken, I was sure I'd seen dimensions on there before. But all week when I looked up plants I couldn't find any. I was thinking, "sure, photos are nice, but I really need a bit MORE than that," (grumble, grumble) . I found the link now, thanks.

Some of the listings don’t give enough detail. Thanks for
the additional information, Bernd and Donna. I now know that at 48" wide, I can’t put them
    where I’d planned.

I may dig up a large Frances Williams and put one there,
which would be near a young Elegans and a 3+ year old Blue Angel. I was reading
here (while dodging doing actual work in the yard) that some sun is needed to show best color, and it is bright there, though
direct sun is brief. Then, no idea where the other should go…original plan was
to put both in a different, symmetrical bed.

Great threads today. How about Bad Dream Queen! That is my second dudliest hosta behind Fire & Ice which still has only one sprout now going into its 4th year. My DQ is only on it's 3rd year so maybe there is still hope! 48" wide!!! I should live so long.

Yesterday we touched on fast growers - Paul's Glory is hands down the fastest grower of all hostas in my garden - I now have 5 of them from a single Lowes purchase in 2011 plus an all blue revision I cut out last year!

linnea - have you been to Cantigny? Excellent hosta gardens. And yeah, every minute I'm on this site is another minute I'm not in my garden doing something that needs doing.

H'mmm...is it slow in general? If it is, maybe I'd better plant the two pots together. Fire & Ice are duds for me too: 4 plants planted in 2004, still only 1 to 2 eyes each, after 11 YEARS. Phooey. Call it fizzled and chilled, not Fire and Ice.
