We are purchasing a 55 year old tri-level house with 1 and a half inch white oak hardwood in just a hallway, dining room, and living room, which is about half of the lower level. The original hardwood has been covered for 52 years and is still actually in great shape.

The problem is the other half of that level includes a family room and entry way (with a small set of stairs, about 5 steps) that do not have the hardwood. There's also a kitchen and laundry room on this level of the house but I don't need to have or really want hardwood there. I really don't want more than two kinds of flooring per level, it's not a giant house and it will be noticeable.

Do we tear up the really nice original wood flooring so we can put the same flooring in all of the rooms, or is it possible to find 1 and a half white oak hardwood to very very very closely match what is already there? Cost estimates per square foot?
