Did you remove last year's growth early this spring? It looks like those are last season's leaves. Best thing to do each late winter/early spring, just before new growth starts, it to cut them back hard; it doesn't take long for the new growth to come up an fill out.

If those are last year's leaves, you could go in and remove them, trying to remove as little of the current season's growth as possible. If you cut back all the new growth, I don't know how readily the plant will regrow - perhaps someone else has experience with that.

I agree with the previous poster in that the damaged leaves are very likely to be last year's leaves left over from the winter. They are 'evergreen' but take a beating over the winter and should be trimmed to the ground in early spring before new shoots rise up. I would not trim them now as in pic 1 there is already new leaves growing and you could damage them when trimming the ratty leaves. Just leave it alone this summer and remember this for next year. Don't trim them in the fall though, as I have experienced that if you do that, they don't come back as nicely the next spring.

Agree with everyone else. However, I mow mine pretty close to the ground (2 inches or so) when I finish my last mowing of the year around Thanksgiving and they never have any trouble regrowing in the spring.

They also appreciate acidic soil,so spread a little coffee grounds around them.good luck!
