Please vote on size

Now that I have the color down on the island pendants, I want to get the size right.

Please take into account, I will be adding a flush probably drum pendant as the third light in the center of the kitchen.

One balloon is 8" the other 10". What size looks better, or should I go in between at 9"

Thanks for your help

The problem with three pendants, as I am seeing it, is that the third spot is over the open area behind the island, not over the island. Another option woud be to have a can light there (or nothing if you don't need the light) and just do two larger pendants and not have them all try to work together. Just let the pendants shine on their own. I think I would prefer that.

lascatx, LOL good thing we are all different and have different taste, otherwise we would be fighting over the same man, house etc. We paid good money to have the cherry "coffin" put over the island. Looking at the picture I posted doesnt do it justice, irl when you look at the whole room and with the right 3 light fixtures, it can be a show stopper imo. I will just have to be patient and wait for the right ones.

busy, I went light shopping again today, actually saw pendants that were the right size, right glass color but were chrome.

When we first bought our house, I liked the "coffin" and all the woodwork. I came to dislike the tube lights inside and the fact that we never had more than half of them working at any one time. That, more than anything, was the reason we took it down -- but taking it down made the kitchen feel so much larger that neighbors thought we'd moved walls.

While I wouldn't go for a chrme chandelier, the chrome in that pendant keeps the fixture light and the glass the main attraction. You have stainless and nickel in your kitchen. I might mock it up with photos and see what you think.

That would be great lascatx, thank you. I am liking the cylinder shape of these pendants as well. When I had the balloons up, I didnt like the color or the round shape. Chrome or nickel would work in the kitchen if the staircase light and front entrance light werent so visible to the kitchen. One is a blackish color with copper accents, and the staircase one is dark bronze with copper accents, so I hesitate in putting chrome in the kitchen.

Don't know if the size and proportions are right but here....

This one is bronze, but with faceted glass to lighten it up. It is traditional, formal in styling. It ships to Canada.

jlc, beautiful pendants, but the first ones are too small in dia, only 5", the Progress ones nickel finish, would really like bronze finish. Thank you for the suggestions.

jdz, thank you for the photo shop, I appreciate it very much.

localeater. LOVE the pendant, color and shape wise, what would you suggest as a centre light?

RA, i really like the last lights you show!! hope you can find something very similar in orb or black... i like the style (and definitely the glass :) for you kitchen. I agree that a darker metal trim would look best.

(also think a flush mount or a semi flush is best for the ceiling... when I said 3 pendants if they were really small, I meant a 3rd installed on the wood trim in line with the other 2.)

busy, thanks, yes they are my favourite ones right now for sure. I agree a flush mount would be best, I dont want anything hanging in the middle.

I've always liked this pendant. It's the Chandler Collection from Elk Lighting. 11" wide. There's a flush mount too. Edit: which I can't find now so it might have been discontinued.

Why don't you just turn the center fixture into a can light? You don't want a light competing with the box, which is mere feet away.

may, that is a gorgeous pendant, might be a tad big, but will definately take note of it. The center light fixture shouldnt compete with the pendants if done correctly they should compliment each other. BTW, it looks closer in the picture than it is, there is at least 5 feet between that and the "coffin" LOL. It is right in the center of the kitchen between the island and the other counters.

Visually, that center fixture is still very close. They are always going to be seen together. I like those last pendants, but I think they will look better on their own. Anything I can imagine with them would take away from them.

Keep in mind that the box adds another element to compete with the fixtures. It too will look better without another fixture right behind it.

You are right lascatx that they will be seen together, that is why I am trying to find a "collection" of pendant and flush mount fixture. This way they are in the same family and compliment each other instead of competing. Decorating is not easy.....but fun!

I'm not seeing the purpose or function of having a decorative light so close. Maybe the box and island were added later by the previous owners during a kitchen remodel?

But anyway, I don't think 11" is too big. Think of the frame and the lights as one unit. You wouldn't put a simple watercolor in a Baroque frame, so you don't want your lights too delicate for the box, nor do you want them to be different styles. I like the one localeater posted too.

We added the box since we changed the shape of the island to a more curved counter top. The previous owners had a ceiling fan in the center and can lights over the island. If there was no center fixture in the kitchen there would be a dark area in the middle so that light functions as overall overhead lighting in the kitchen.

Yes, I should think of the frame and lights as one unit, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I learn a lot of you guys and I appreciate the help.

The one localeater posted is gorgeous, but looking it at up close, it has a lot of little hooks, like a chandelier, which I dont know if I would like. For price tag of $400 each including tax, it would have to be perfect, so the hunt is still on.

Rose, NYCBluedevil used a pair of beehive type pendants in her kitchen reno. I love those pendants and would have used them but felt like I would be copying from her. I am going to try to link her final kitchen reveal.http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2595152/nycbluedevil-final-kitchen-reveal

I hope she doesn't mind but I love her kitchen and I think the pendants would look great in your kitchen.

I have found my dream fixtures.....unfortunately the price range of the pendant is more than I can spend. The flush mount is reasonable. Does anyone know of any other brand other than Hinkley who make such pendants.

Googlle pinapple pendant lighting. There is a similar one on Lighting Direct and at Lowes for $134.

I saw those, that line doesnt have a matching flush mount, comes in black not bronze. The finishes would be too different, being close together they have to match.

Rose, I love the Hinkley Plantation line. It was on my very short list of fixtures for my breakfast area and kitchen. Of course I loved the burnished brass but holy cow did that add to cost! Hinkley's Cambridge line is also lovely. I used the large flush mount in my master bedroom. Hinkley is a very good quality but pricey.

holly, the cambridge line is beautiful. I love the glass. So did you end up getting the plantation fixtures?

    last modified: 11 years ago

Did you look at the black corral finish? Looks like a bronze type to me. Get the $134 ones in black corral and the Hinkley flush mount in copper bronze and then do a little detailing to adjust the finish if needed, A craft store or crafty friend could help you if you are unsure how to go on that. Maybe $5-10 for some rub on finish. Done for about $500 total.

lascatx, you are tempting me..... the one thing though is that the glass looks more detailed on the hinkley one. The pendants might look inferior to the flush mount when hung.

do you think the smaller hinkley pendants would work? They are 6 inches in dia. Would it look too dainty?

    last modified: 11 years ago

Yes. and too sparse. You are reaching the overthinking stage. A day or two after they are hung, you will never look at them as closely as you are right now, and most likely no one else who enters your room ever will. They are not going to be hung rght next to each other. They will be at different heights and depths. Chances are they will work fine. If not, look for another or just do the can option. You can alway go back to a flush mount if you fnd something else later.

thanks, I think I am feeling desperate, so I need to take a break from this project. Maybe I will start looking for the chandelier for the dining room, hopefully that will go better.

Rose, I didn't use the Hinkley.I finally chose Schonbek Bagatelle pendants for over my small island and sink and the chancy for over the breakfast table in the same line. I made a not so great decision when I went with the 10 inch pendant over the island and then only got the eight inch for over the sink. I thought that would be the first thing I changed but I am used to it now so I don't even notice it anymore.

If you're interested in crystal on a budget, try Lamps Plus Open Box website. I don't think that elaborate of a pendant keeps with the style of your kitchen though. If you had a larger kitchen, elaborate wood hood, decorative trim everywhere, then yes. But it's a typical traditional kitchen that looks a little richer because of the door style and cherry stain.

holly, those are some beautiful pendants!

may, I am not looking for crystal, if you are talking about the pineapple pendants, the shade is optic glass.

Okay, optic glass. They have ten pages of pendants marked down, including well-known brands.

they dont ship to canada :>(

hi roseabbey, a 'shades of light' catalog came in the mail the other day and i thought of you when paging thru it.... they have a fasciati glass lantern which is 18"hx12.5" wide which might work as pendents... don't know if that's too big or if the style would interest you, but might be an option... they also have a coordinating ceiling light. it's all very reasonably priced...

there's also a wire fasciati wire glass cylinder pendent which is a mini pendent, but longer like you had said you were interested in-- 12"hx6"w, but i think that would be too small??

there's also a glass cloche pendent that's 15"hx14"w... pricier tho... but, alittle bigger again which I think you could(should?) have since theyr're clear and you will only have 2...

anyway, don't know if you saw these already...

thanks busy, I will take a look.

Any thoughts on this pendant. size is 22 x 10

    VERY pretty!

    last modified: 11 years ago

tibbrix thanks , I think I may have a winner here. What about the size 22x10 not too big?

I like it. A lot more than the pineapples. About a third of the length is in the metal and is an extension of the hanging chain. That means the glass is maybe 14-16" long -- enough to give you the 10" heft you wanted with enough length to keep it from being the ballon on a string you didn't like.

Have you decided what to do for a flush mount with that?

Thanks lascatx. This is actually a hanging lamp, so DH would have to convert it, which I guess is no big deal. I am going to check in out in person tomorrow and see if I like it .

I will have to try and get something to compliment these pendants if I go ahead with them. That will be another thing I will be posting to get help with.

I like it too-- also more than the pineapples... I don't think it's too wide for sure-- the bulk of it is not 10" wide- and probably not too long. my question would be what color is it when it's on... the shade looks like it might have some amber in it which might look alittle orangey with the light on??? maybe, but maybe not! :)

busy, might not look too bad with the little bit of amber on the glass, my granite has rust spots in it so it might tie in with that and I consider the cabinets to have an orange undertone,

Actually found these pictures with the lights on....looks pretty nice

    Smaller

    last modified: 11 years ago

looks nice in the pic... maybe you can see it on in a store too?

how much space is between the wood molding and the ht where the pendent would stop above your island?? if there's 30-36" of space, I think they might look fine... the picture of them over the table makes them look wider than 10" ... I think you're fine with the width- a 6-7" mini would look skimpy since you only will have 2...

I think you could get away with larger with clear glass-- these will 'take up more space'...

let us know what you think when you see them in person!

Those are not the same as the ones you selected. It's possible the bell shape makes them look bigger.

That is a beautiful light but I think it may be a tad too large. Do they have it in a smaller size? I think the color and the shape would look wonderful in your room.

busy, looks beautiful in the store. I ordered 2 should be here next week. There is 62 inches from where the fixture would be installed to the top of my island. So we install them 30 inches above the island, that leaves 32 inches, 22 inch light approx 10 inch chain.

may, that is actually the exact same pendant

holly, no doesnt come in smaller size, hopefully it will work
