Mango harvest!

Amazing year for mangos! Last year we had nothing. We have given out mangos to neighbors, coworkers, lawn guy, pool guy etc lol. This is what we picked just TODAY. There are hundreds still on the tree. I don't know why we had so much this year. I am originally from NY and don't have much experience with them. We did nothing different except pruning to open up the middle. I did notice that there was virtually no athracnose this year. I had a friend stop by today to pick up a bag of mangos. She is originally from India and grew up near mango orchards. She said that in her country it's typical to have almost no mangos every few years. I did notice that all over the county the trees are full so there must be some conditions that were just right. Whatever it is, I'm loving it.

same here in North Miami. Last year my tree barely gave me anything and this year I'm getting about 15 mangoes a day falling starting May 1st. my freezer is 95% full of chopped mango and I'm giving them away now. Its hard because many neighbors have mango trees here too and are trying to also give them away lol. My mangoes taste great but yours are far prettier than mine. No idea what variety mine are as its a mango tree next to my back door and is part of the little house / section of property I rent. Great pics. Ive never picked a mango before. I can't even keep up with what is dropping LOL. I feel very fortunate to not have to buy fruit for prob about 6 months between the 3 months of them falling and 3 months worth in the freezer but I wish I knew people to trade with for avocados and other things lol

Not sure what variety. It came with the house. I'm new to mango myself. I wish I had avocados too! We planted an avocado tree 2 years ago. Can't wait!

I do sny you all. Mango is my favorite fruit.

I envy you all, my mangoes are awful this year. Very small this year, I am guessing from lack of water, though we have a sprinkler but haven't had much rain. My tree is getting old also, so maybe that's the problem.

If anyone has some to sell Please LMK? Sarasota to Ft Meyers I'm willing to drive if the price is right,lol...Thanks!! I live in Sebring so I'm hoping not to drive less than 2 hours? Please email me if you have any...

awe sorry. im on the east side - Miami. If you're going to drive somewhere for a ton of mangoes, have the freezer space and freezer safe Tupperware ready for chopped mango because you'll need it :p

Thanks Mia, I wish I live closer to Miami lol...I used to live there almost 10 years ago!

puglvr1 believe it or not my tree is done! The last few are hanging on at the top that we can;t reach. I wish I had more for you! My husband and I were trying to ballpark how much we harvested this year and it was in the 500 range. We estimated by how much we gave away to coworkers, landscapers, pool people, neighbors, and anyone driving or kayaking by. It was unbelievable. If there are any weather/meteorology nuts out there who is willing to look at historical conditions re rainfall timing and temps I'd be very interested to know what made it just right for this area. The trees all over my area in Broward were hanging low with ripe fruit. FYI we are staging our Miami condo for sale so I was browsing craigslist free section for a broken flat screen TV and there are many people putting ripe mangos on the curb and posting the location. I guess it was that bad, or good lol, this year. Mangos are down to 50 cents in the stores here too.

Hi Halfwaythere...that is not the case here in my area. Sebring is really not a prime mango area we get more freeze weather than you guys so its really pushing the zone! If it was closer I would go more south and get tons of mangoes,lol...

Boy I'm jealous. Here in Stuart our Mango harvest was a bust this year. Our tree only had one & my neighbor has 3 trees with only a couple fruit on each. Hoping for a better harvest next year. We had really odd weather this winter while the fruit was setting.

Same here, in PSL, a lousy crop. The fruit was very small. I guess I had enough just so small. I think the lack of rain was the problem.

My issues were Powdery Mildew that attacked the blooms then a "freeze" I had in late Feb. fried some of the blooms that survived **sigh**

Rainy, foggy and wet/humid winter can wreak havoc to blooms. Mango blooms prefer a dry winter during blooming and early fruit formation... once the fruits starts growing rain or regular watering is a good idea. On the other hand a lot of rain and overwatering can water down the flavor. Mother Nature plays (weather) a big role in getting it just right,lol...

maybe that's why my tree did crappy last year and great this year. Last year lots of rain, this year hardly any

Very well could have been your issue last year? I'm hoping for a better mango season next year :o)

perhaps :) March & April I had the grape to golf ball size mangoes falling. May to now Ive had about 15 mangoes dropping a day and as of a few days ago its slowed down to about 7 mangoes or so. are anyone else's trees about done or slowing down? A couple yrs ago when I got a ton of mangoes I remember it being over in August.

Are everyone's trees done w/ mangoes? I had tiny ones in April. It was crazy with all the good size mangoes in May & June and by July first there was so few dropping that I didn't even fight the iguanas for them anymore :P

Yes, I am done, but mine is an early tree. I had a very small crop this year, but they did finally get to a decent size, though not huge.

I'm done. Started mid May, done by end of June. Huge harvest.

I had a terrible harvest of mango's this year. I now have 6 trees, the old reliable Glenn, now 5 yrs in the ground, had about 50 ripe fruits in late June, almost half what it had last year. The other 5 trees had only a few each. However, last years harvest was tremendous on all trees. Did nothing different except a light pruning early on. I don't question Mother Nature anymore,...just accept the fact that some years are bonanzas, some not. The anticipation itself is exciting I think. lol
