It's a opossum, which is a marsupial, so it's not in the rodent family. Widespread throughout the US. Nasty little buggers sometimes.

That's right, it's not a rodent; let it go free.

That is a beautiful animal. Please let it go. It is great for eating slugs and catching rodents!!

They are awesome! They never have rabies because their body temperature is too low. They are shy. When cornered, they like to fake being dead or "play possum". Unlike squirrels, they don't seem to gnaw through roofs or nest in attics. They are cute. The mothers carry their babies around in kangaroo-like pouches. With wildlife disappearing across America, I'm glad to know that possums aren't gone yet. I still occasionally see them in my neighborhood. I'd set him free, too.

I find it difficult to believe that someone doesn't know what an opossum is.

Let me edit this.....I am curious how someone can live in this country...even in a city....and not be familiar with what an opossum looks like.

I am not being critical in the least, only very interested.
