What kind of plant was it, can you describe it? By "kind", I mean was it a shrub, a tree, or a perennial plant of some kind?

You'll have to describe it, at least a little. (It wasn't a Jerusalem cherry, was it?)

it's a cherry bush/tree, possibly identified by term "doorstep/doorstop"

Wayne: I got one of those from her, too, and have not been able to find any information about it. The internet never heard of a "doorstop" cherry. It's a small upright shrub that's covered in the spring with tiny pink flowers.

I'm with cuz'n Rhizo on this one - flowering almond; no telling how many of those I've seen growing just outside the back porch at old Alabama farmsteads... I know both of my grandmothers had 'em...

I was thinking it sounded like a possible Ardisia, crenata or elliptica.
