Tonight I saw a little guy sitting on the wire I keep out on my deck for hummers. I don't quite understand why seeing a hummer on the wire hits me so hard, but it does. Makes my heart smile. Tiny little thing keeping watch. Such a little nothing to me and such a big thing to him!

Of course, he uses the wire to guard "his" feeders. I have other feeders up that he can't guard from there, and salvia and honeysuckle everywhere, so the other hummers don't lose anything. But his sitting on that wire tells me that the feeders are valuable to him. It also tells me there is at least one other hummer out there.

The wire also keeps him on my deck much longer than just a feeding would. If you want to see more of your hummers, put up a wire.
