1/16" mesh source?

I'm currently using a aquaruin/terrarium screen top for a 1/16" sieve, but I want to make a bigger wooden one the same size as my 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8. Kitchen strainers are too small.

Does anyone know where to get 1/16 in wire mesh/hardware cloth without having topay 100's to buy a whole roll?

Most hardware stores sell aluminum or copper screen 3 feet wide by the foot. Calistoga Al

    Thanks...but

    "bug screen" is 30 mesh,

what I'm looking for is 12 mesh.

30 mesh? I don't think so. Bug screen isn't a standard mesh size. Standard bug screen is denoted as the number of horizontal and vertical stands per inch and the standard is 16 x 18.

The top is what you would find at the big box stores to put in your screen door. The bottom is what my terrarium screen is made of. The bottom is also used for many commercial applications and I can buy a roll for about $950, but I can not find anyone that sells the bottom screen retail by the foot.

I've bought many rolls of screen to fix windows and doors, and they always look like the lower picture. 12 mesh, or more commonly 16x18 (as noted above), is the standard size pretty much everywhere, in fact, I've never seen 30 mesh at any store around here, because visibility through it is minimal, which makes it useless for typical windows.

Now I think we are at the point where we have to ask, "where are you located and are chiggers/noseeums a problem in your area?"

SC Pa. Our screen looks like the top. If it looked like the bottom I would have a cloud of gnats in my living room!

    I'll look online for 16x18.

Personally, I find that insect screen is a tad too fine for my gritty mix needs. It doesn't pass enough fines through, so I use a 10 mesh sifter that I found at a local farm & home supply store. Sure, I have quite a bit more waste with my Turface, but it's worth it to get rid of the small particles. Check Amazon for different size mesh screens if you want take make your own sifters.

    12"x24" for $9.50.

    Thanks!

Did you ever get your mesh and was it good? Can't find that product at Grainger now.

You need "aluminum insect screen", the one that is aluminum (it's shiny). Its mails are 1/16in and it costs less than 10 dollars to wrap you entire living room with it... That's from Home Depot in the U.S.A, in Canada I don't know where you'll find it, Maybe Lowe's or Home Depot? Google says you guys have those stores too. A couple of them in Toronto.

I'm using it right now to screen my Turface and it is pretty good but I only used it twice so far.

I looked up "aluminum insect screen" online at Home Depot in the U.S. I see a charcoal insect screen, black insect screen, and bright aluminum insect screen. Not sure which it is. I can check in the store. I am heading down to the U.S. in a couple of weeks. I did look online here at Home Depot. The cheapest one is $30. They seem to come in bigger rolls only. I appreciate the information!

Perfect! Thank you val rie! I will now know what I am looking for!

Newhostalady, I never did get the screen and continue to use my aquarium screen top. I only have 5 Japanese Maples and I only re-pot one or two per year, so I'm not using as much of the gritty mix as I thought I would when I posted this in 2015.

Thanks for the update mblan13. Sometimes our plans don't come to life. I am planning to put together a small amount of gritty mix to try out, and hoping to be able to make a larger quantity for my houseplants and other plants. Currently the 511 is my focus and we'll see what happens further down the road!

I obtain this screen cover yesterday for 50 cents from my horticultural society meeting. I was hoping the mesh was close to the 1/16th of an inch. It's actually 1/12th. Might use it until I get something better. I've seen this kind of thing in stores. I believe it is a cover used to protect your food from insects outdoors.

Nice sieve and so cheap! If this is 1/12in, it is perfect, even better than 1/16in because this will remove more fines and the Turface will be closer to the grit and bark for the target size (1/8in to 1/4in).

I just sifted the ingredients for 4 gallons of gritty mix. Enough to transplant that 3.5 gallon tree that is still in its nursery pot as well as a few seedlings I got from the wild recently, that I planted in half peat half perlite, which is very bad at draining now that I've experienced gritty.
