Salvia benthamiana

Just to advise anyone who has this Brazilian Salvia, although very rare and beautiful, it is a magnet for spidermite when the temperature rises.

Other spidermite magnets here (UK) are the "Wish" series (Wendy, Ember, and Love and Wishes), dombeyi, large splendens (eg Yvonne), concolor, and miniata.

Really hate this miniscule monster, difficult to eradicate. Keeping glasshouse over-wintered Salvias moist and with fresh air does not help so much. I have a very strong chemical...Dynamec...not available to the public...but I HATE using this ...it will kill all beneficial insects, and you must never get this on your skin or breathe the fumes. There are expensive predators available, these do work! Sadly I bought some 3 weeks ago and the weather suddenly became much colder, which killed the predators but not the mites!

Tonight we expect gale-force winds and heavy rain. Rain is welcome but not the wind, as have recently planted 100s of Salvias around my garden (yard!). Dread to see the damage tomorrow morning.

Rant over...........Robin.
