Original shallots are classified Allium Cepa var. Aggregatum and procreate by vegetative reproduction (They divide), compared to regular onions that are grown from seed. Newer shallot varieties have been develpoed to be grown from seed but I don't how they would be classified... There are other in between Allium Cepa that reproduce both ways that I wouldnt know how to classify either...

I have read about the difference, but am looking for a shallot, not an onion. And I'm confused by that specific one--- any ideas on what that specific one is? Or are you saying that it may be some kind of hybrid?

Well, from the description, "These new varieties multiply extensively providing a fine assortment of sizes and are resistant to bolting." I would think it was a shallot because it still multiplies vegetativly but that's the only factor that has me leaning toward shallot. That's just the simple answer because since the development of seed grown shallots, "lines" have blurred....

If it is indeed a new variety, it probably developed by crossing and growing by seed and keeping the multiplying trait for the final product.. I don't know if there are strict guidlines for preventing regular onion crosses and still calling the final product a shallot but the cross could be from known shallot varieties or onion varieties...

You have to also consider that shallots are a type multiplier onion (var. Aggregatum) which includes other varieties of onions that aren't considerd shallots. From what I understand, taste may be the defining factor but again, you can have onions that have a similar taste to shallots depending on variety. So, if you look into the specifics, it can be a ball of confusion..

I'd say, look to the old varieties of shallots if you want to be sure what you have...
