Hang a smallish portrait oriented picture there in a nice frame. This would be a great place to hang a family picture you printed as the size would be about right. You could also go with a long panoramic picture there as well. Just not more than about 16" wide so it looks right proportionally.

Depending on the dynamics of your family, you could also put a vase or plant in a nice pot on the step or floor, but only if it wouldn't be a tripping hazard.

I would add a mirror which is always handy and if you wanted to decorate your entryway a bit more, you could add a runner.
