Splitting a fig tree

I have several figs that froze back to the ground the last two winters and are now coming up with about 10 trunks in a bush style. Some are 1-2' apart. I'm tempted to split these into new fig trees to transplant to other locations that get more sun. I planned on using a very sharp shovel and slicing down through the root zone and all to remove a "prepotted" fig. Anyone done this?

I have not done it, but as long as each trunk has it's own roots, should not be a problem. I have tried to take suckers that appear from below ground, but some did not have roots. They were attached to the main trunk. Just be sure you get roots!

Another option is to air layer some of those trunks so you are SURE you have roots!

Can you air layer this years growth? Cause since it froze to the ground that's all I've got

Absolutely! You have 10 trunks, you could have 10 rooted trees, and if you put your air layer higher on the trunk, when it roots and you clip it off, the mother trunk will make new shoots.

I would also try air layering

But if your going to split it, try digging it up and actually cutting each bench off with a handsaw or spade, this way you'll be able to see everything better. I'd wait till fall for that though
