I don't know enough about Fortuniana to be able to help you but I think if you posted this over on the regular rose forum you might get a better response.

i reposted it in the antiques along with a question about and unknown root stock sucker .

In my climate (cent. TX), Fortuniana roots easily & fast when it's HOT.

And ONLY when it's hot. I root in coarse sand, in full sun, under mist. Last fall, while things were still warm, I tried to root a bunch for root stocks in a hot bed. Barely got a single one to take.
But in June-Aug., it will root like a weed. Maybe it will root for you in summer temps. Good luck :)

If it is blooming take the cuttings when you dead head. That's a good time to take cuttings on any rose because once it's bloomed it goes back into growth mode. If it's not blooming take cutting from the newest growth areas but not places where the canes are still soft. hey need to be stiff enough to stick in the soil and stand up.

ok ill look for harder new growth . thank you all so much ... the sucker is getting so big that i have to make the choice between possibly losing the grafted rose and just killing the sucker .... so hopefully i can root this guy quick .
