Michelia?

I live in zone 6a with pretty cold winters in central MO. I came across what looks like Michelia, but thriving in zone 6a! The tree in the pic does not have a fragrant flower. But the other trees I have seen, have nice jasminy scent wafting when I walk by. What is it?

Looks like a sweetbay magnolia or Magnolia virginiana. If you crush the leaves it should smell something like bay leaves.

Dar is right. That is a sweetbay. Looks like mine, especially the flower. It's a native magnolia. Not a southern one, so it is quite cold hardy. The flower will smell lemony.
