I purchased a mature Paeonia lutea on its own root and planted it in my yard three years ago. Last year I gathered seeds and scattered them around mother plant. I checked on them today and many of the sprouted. However I found some of the sprouts to have woody base and it seems that my P. lutea is suckering about 12-18 inches away from the base of the plant. Is it possible to uncover, cut off and pot up these suckers if I retain some roots on the cutting? Is it typical for P. lutea to sucker? I know P. delaveyi is a heavy sucker and with time it creates large thickets (eg. next to residence in Bloedel Reserve). Does P. lutea do the same?
