Help- transplanted large ostrich ferns flopping

I got a bunch of tall ostrich ferns from someone who was clearing an area of their garden. I dug and planted them all the same day, and while some fronds got bent in digging and transport, most looked pretty good. That was yesterday. Today about half of them are falling over: some just tilted (like the root ball rotated), but some are bending and buckling the fronds,(and some bends are down 6 inches from the base). most of the ferns are 3 ft tall - a lot of weight up there! I tried loosely staking the worst ones but my stakes are too short to really hold up the tops. Should i get taller stakes? Should I lob them all off at 2ft so they have some green but not so much weight up top? Thank you for your advice!
