Jessaka, I never had any luck with butterfly bushes. They grow like weeds for most people, I guess I babied mine to much, sorry I cannot help you. It could just be this crazy spring?

I am reading how they are a noxi ous weed. ha. I lost two of mine and now who knows? if nothing happens in a month I will prune it or tear it out too. thanks stockergal.

Did you prune it back this spring? BF bushes shed be pruned in late winter to early spring to within 1 To 2' from the ground. I have one that is dwarf variety that I prune down to about 6". Just don't prune in the fall because they need those branches and stems for winter protection. I forgot one year and pruned in fall and lost that one. You could take a chance and prune it some now or just wait until next year if you are a patient person. BBs are shallow rooted, like azaleas and blueberries. Not to say they like acid soil cuz they don't. I am referring to the Buddleia davidii cultivars in this response. Other species have different pruning requirements. Good luck.

I have great luck with buddleia (butterfly bushes). I used to grow them in Nebraska, where they freeze to the ground level every winter anyway. Here in central OK, I wait until I see some new spring growth starting, then cut the old "canes" off as close to the base as possible. They seem to like the harsh treatment. Cutting them back like this every year will produce a beautifully globe-shaped plant, which won't get super big.

I did buy one of those new dwarf varieties and couple years ago, and the poor darling is just not super strong. It is just spindly and little, but without that lovely globe shape my big ones get. Anyone else growing the dwarf types?
