Kitchen review

hi! If someone could please glance at our current kitchen layout. It will have a gas cooktop with a microwave/oven combo about two cabinets to the right of the cooktop with a pantry to the right of the oven. We left the sink there because we wanted to have it more aligned with the cooktop and close to the fridge. our style will be a modern look inside. If anyone can throw in some advice about the layout and efficiency standpoint, my husband and I would appreciate it. Thanks!

cpartist's changes make a lot of great functional sense and will look nice while giving you a very functional space. The only thing I'm concerned about is dish storage. It's nice to have the place for your everyday dishes, eating utensils, and glasses close to the DW so it's quicker to unload. I think I'd move the clean-up sink to the right so there could be a drawer stack to the left of the DW for storing those items. We have a 21" wide stack for those items and we have plenty of room for everything (4 drawers with the bottom drawer tall enough for the glassware). With 48" aisles, it is do-able with someone working at each sink, back to back, but it would be better if you could widen that aisle to more like 54" to avoid accidental bum-bumping. Is that possible?

I like cpartist's changes with the exception of maybe putting the dishwasher on the right of the clean up sink so you can have the DW open at the same time as the fridge.

If you're concerned about the view of the kitchen from the great room and really want the range on that back wall, you could center it between the front of the fridge and the end of it's counter run. Not sure if that makes sense. I drew up a few thoughts while looking at your layout.

You may have had some kind of a hutch to the right of the range. I'd keep that end open for serving. It'd make a good landing spot to serve the table from.

I'd consider a slider in the dining area as a swinging door will limit floor clearance available for seating.

It looks like if you're planning seating at the island, the overhang might be undersized. a minimum of 15" is recommended and you also need to allow depth for the cover panel on the back of the base cabinets.

I'd be a little concerned about that pinch point entering the dining area. It looks a bit tight. If you only plan seating for four people in that dining area it might not be an issue, but If that's your primary dining space and you want seating for more than four, that corner of the island could create a traffic jam.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! We pretty much went with your changes chartist. Here's the new layout. Thanks so much! And soon the hard part, designing the way the cabinets look. What would be a good spot for the microwave? Right next to the fridge?

My husband actually wants induction but I didn't want to deal with the heavier pans, so I'm still undecided about that. Is having heavier pans worth it or are there any lighter pans I can use?

Happy to be able to help.

Induction isn't about heavy pots. It's about pots that are magnetic. I'm told there is a good set of pots at walmart and target. I forgot the name, but others here can let you know.

Have you considered a drawer microwave? As to where to put it? Some of us need a microwave closer to the fridge and some prefer it closer to the cooking area. Only you can decide what works better for you.

I would keep the DW on the left side of the sink, as cpartist drew it. Less chance of someone who is prepping making a quick turn to the fridge and running into the open door. Also, that puts the trash pullout on the right side, where it can be more easily shared by both clean-up and prep areas.

benjesbride makes a good point about the path between the DR and LR. You could do clipped corners on the island to open up the path, and to decrease the chance of bruised hips.

I use the tramontina pots and pans from Walmart on my induction. Not heavy. Love induction!

I would actually put the trash by the prep sink instead. At least in my kitchen, I would estimate that 90% of trash is generated during prep. What little needs to be scraped and dumped after a meal is usually fine for the garbage disposal. Agree DW should be to left of cleanup sink.

Yes, if located by the prep sink, trash would still work for both areas, and would work well for MW-generated trash, if the MW will be beside the fridge.

Then dish storage could be in drawers on the right side of the sink, with glasses in upper cabs beside fridge.
