Recently planted hydrangea- wilting

Beginner Gardner. Zone 5. We just put 3 hydrangeas(#5), 2 shrubs, and 3 heuchera in a similar section. I realized soil was very much clay. I added some peat moss and compost manure, but not a lot and not real deep. 82 high and 65 lows. Morning Sun. Planted Friday night- heavy water. Heavy water Sat morning. Nothing as it rained Sunday. I noticed soil remaining wet on Monday, but still did light watering in am (probably mistake). Tuesday nothing, temps to 90, 2 wilted badly in evening and soil still moist with finger test. 3rd looking weak, but not as bad. No yellow leaves. Nothing noticeable with other plants and our two Ligularia not far away were showing no weakness from heat.

I dug up one hydrangea Tuesday night and lots of sticky clay. I added a mix of mostly peat moss and some sand along with softer soil and repositioned. I did not add water after this process.

Any help on whether I should dig up remaining plants in clay soil and really improve it? Be patient? One conern is shrubs died last winter in same spot ( New house ) so it could be from former neglect or soggy soil.

I struggle with proper water on New plants, especially if I do pull up and readjust.

Any help appreciated!
