Please help me pick one

I have 15 dollars to spend on plants at Lowes, and conveniently they have many varieties of hydrangea available right now for that price. :)

So here are the options:

Midnight salsa

Merritts supreme

Brestenberg

Pink sensation

Leuchtfeuer

Blue danube

Sandy summer

Firelight

Bavaria

I was particularly intrigued by Midnight salsa since the tag says full sun to partial shade instead of the usual morning sun. I want something that can handle our heat in August and take some sun. I'm also looking for something around 4 feet. This seems like it may fit the bill? But I can't find much information on it on the web. Anyone know about this one or any of the others?

Thanks!

Sara

Firelight is a paniculata which can handle the sun better than a macrophylla such as Merritts Supreme. Apart from these two, I do not know the others on your list.

Those are the Kurt Weiss greenhouse hydrangeas (green or black pots). Notorious for being marked wrong (see my recent post) Aside from Salsa and Sandy the tags are mostly NOT correct. Some you'll even notice have additional tags in the soil line, and some of those are even incorrect. One I recently bought had a soil tag that read "Horben" but is likely actually Early Blue. Another is blooming dark pink with green streaks, and I haven't been able to figure that one out. Another looks like Lemmonhof which is rare. They have also grown stuff like Pistachio and some Plants Nouveau entries generically. I think their tied into the Holland Breeders Association where they get things in unlicensed and grow/sell generically.

I've had Salsa for several years in a pot and it's very good, even as just a foliage plant.

An example of their incorrect marking recently was a SOIL TAG that read "Fire Light, 'SMHPFL' PPAF" - which is for a completely different kind of hydrangea (Spring Meadows Hydrangea Paniculata Fire Light).

Buying KW hydrangeas at Lowe's can be a great way to collect but a nightmare to identify!

About 2 years ago I purchased at Lowe's 'Grayswood', which I believe is a lacecap mountain hydrangea. I bought it for siting near a front stoop below a window as part of a landscape redo to sell my MIL's home. I wanted it so that the new homeowner would see the lovely flowers as they exited the driveway to go in the front doorway.

Wouldn't you know about a year later after the sale we happened to be in the neighborhood at a nearby wedding venue and we decided DH and I to drive past his childhood home-- the new owners had redone the entire front landscape over!! WTH???!!! And I had put decent stuff in there so it wouldn't over grow the space I had to work with!!

I haven't gone back since then... I hate to think what they did with the small rose garden I installed in the backyard so it could be seen from the upstairs bedroom windows!

Regarding Lowes I see many of the pots mixed with both a lacecap and a mop! Got one last year and planted at the Church and both are blooming!

See, this stuff is what intrigues me about greenhouse hydrangeas, and why they should be experimented with. You just never know which are going to surprise and perform.

KW Greenhouse hydrangeas are especially hardy because they are grown in fields in the northeast.

And another note when shopping... You will get some pots that have up to 3 root systems from up to 3 cuttings being started in them. Being in a hurry, they sometimes accidentally mix different plants together!
