Pepper ID

Please ID this pepper for me. I bought Hungarian Wax and Tabasco seeds from SeedsNow, but I can't figure out which this is. The plant is about 3 ft tall with very broad leaves (some are bigger than my hand).

Thanks!

(Sorry the picture went sideways, iPhone does dumb things sometimes.)

Sure looks like Jalapeno to me

Yah, It looks like a Jalapeno to me too. It is not a Hot Hungarian Wax or Tobasco. Both are typically yellowish when immature and probably more telling is that your peppers seem to be growing "pendant" or downward. HHW and tobasco both tend to grow upwards and stay that way. Some will eventually drop bendant as they reach full size and maturity, but that isn't the case with yours. Be careful with your seed sources. Never use ebay or Amazon.com for sure. You are better off trading with others on this forum or simply asking for seeds. Many will send you some just for a self addressed stamped envelope.

Good luck and don't despair, Jalapeno are a fine pepper. Firm, thick and meaty with a tolerable heat.

Sorry, can't agree with Jal... These are immature pods & they aren't as pointy.

There are others that are similar to Jals. And they very well could be something else. I was just making an educated guess as to what they are. What is a bit more certain is what they are are not. And they are not Hot Hungarian Wax and they are not Tabasco.

Looks to me like some kind of Paprika. The skin looks rougher than a Jalapeno. Just my guess.

    Leutschauer Paprika

Guessing chiles without fruit and flower is a fool's errand.

I was thinking it looked sort of like a jalapeño, but I really have no idea.

Seeds came from SeedsNow.com. I've never had any problems with them, but this doesn't look like whatever pepper it was supposed to be. I've posted this picture on their FB page to ask them.

    Thanks for your input everyone!

Here is another fruit on the same plant. I put my hand in for scale. They start bright green like this and deepen as they grow.

Kind of looks like the Ancho Grande on their site or their version of an Anaheim chili.

I had problems with them as seeds were not what they were suppose to be. I wouldn't order from them again.

Could be an Ancho. Maybe a Big Jim as well. If so, it will get quite a bit bigger and eventually go ripe. If it is an ancho, it will go deep dark green/brown. It is going to take more time to figure out for sure what you have there.

    These are big jim peppers.

Ronnyb, this is the first issue I have had with their seeds. Everything else has grown great (this has, too!) and has been what I ordered. Thanks for the help!

    Esox, thanks for the visual!

What is it supposed to be anyway?

I bought Hungarian hot wax and Tabasco seeds, can't remember which I planted where (sq ft method). So it is meant to be one of those, but I guess an errant seed got slipped in the packet. There are Tabasco and HHW elsewhere in my garden that are true to type.

    Emily,
I had ordered the Lemon Hab from them and the Choc Hab from them. The Lemon turned out to be orange Hab and the Choc Hab never germinated a single seed out of 20. So figuring my mistake on the choc hab, maybe wrong growing method, I ordered again and still no germination. I gave up on those and ordered from someone else and got immediate germination.

We all get 1 or 2 seeds mixed up in packs. It is something common in the industry. Just enjoy.

    Esox..
Those Jims look nice. I grew those before but mine had a BER problem before I know how to control it and what it was.

    Ronny,

Sorry for your problems! I'm not upset that I got something else in my little packet, I'm just curious as to what I really have growing! Hopefully they get to ripen before my vole comes back. He has eaten most of my peas and 3 pepper plants so far. :-/ I'll have to dig out and re-line this bed at the end of summer.

My 2 habanero plants are growing healthy, but I noticed the new leaves show a pretty yellow, is this natural for it to look like this?

Just an update: I harvested a few of these peppers last week (still green-they weren't turning and I was impatient!). They tasted just like a bell pepper, no hint of hot at all.
