It has been an odd weather year. Why not pull a couple of each and sample them and see if the flavor and texture are acceptable. If so, there's no reason to arbitrarily yank them out, unless you want to plant something else in their place. Some years I haven't harvested them until July and they've been fine. Just be sure to keep an eye on them and don't leave them too long or their flavor and texture can suffer. Much depends on if they are in full sun or part sun and whether or not they are heavily mulched, or planted so closely together that they shade the ground for one another to keep it cool. If you are able to keep the soil temperature cooler, you can let them stay in the ground longer without sacrificing flavor or quality.

I really don't need the space but my father in law thought I should pull them all so I googled. they are mass planted in 4x20 foot beds and they have been thinned regularly to make room for the ones left behind. I need to do another thinning of beets but really did not want to have to take them all out .

Well, technically, he is correct. Normally you need to harvest the beets before they turn woody or pithy, which can happen if they get too big or too hot/dry, and carrots are sweeter when harvested early. Still, I find I can get away with leaving them in the ground longer when it is moist and well-mulched. How long a person can do that just depends on the weather, though, so that's why you have to check them often. Cool-season crops left in the ground too long can go bad quickly. Potatoes seem like they could be left in the ground a long time, but in our hot climate, especially in a wet year, they can go from looking all nice and wonderful to being rotting masses of slimey goo in a matter of days. Our soil gets too hot for them in general, but I've noticed it is much more of an issue if the soil is moist than if it is really dry.
