I would be interested to know where you are located and to get many close ups of this rose. I would not be able to determine but will forward to experts that could. As far as I know RRD has not made it to MB but would be nice to confirm.

I was hoping it wasn't RRD and I didn't think it had made it here either. I am in Winnipeg. It's not red at all but the tall cane is very thorny. I will get out my proper camera and try and get some closer photos. Appreciate your help. Thanks guys.

I did forward the photos but I do agree with twrosz. Dig it up and dispose of any soil that could have been in touch with the roots. If your in mid to southern MB RRD has been there, sorry. In my absolutely uneducated call I would say yours had RRD.

VStapes, I'm no expert on RR disease and whether a certain amount of time should be allowed to pass before replanting another rose in the same spot ... though, if it were me, I'd put something else there. Do keep a very close watch on your other roses for any similar suspicious growth and head on over to the rose forum where lots of good advice is available.

I have a Persian Yellow that is looking similar, it along with other roses got nailed by frost. The leaves appear to be slowly expanding to normal size, I will keep an eye on it. I was reading a bit on RRD and it said vigorous growth, mines not, but the article also said it has different characteristics with different varieties of roses.

Got a reply back, pictures are don't show enough, nor did I have enough information. Conclusion was the risk benefit over cost was huge. It isn't a hard to find rose, $20 lost. Sorry....

Thanks for trying. I dug it up and threw it away. Likely would have taken all summer to catch up anyway if it wasn't RRD. I brought home 7 new roses from the nursery today to make up for it LOL!

I am no expert, but I did come across a few articles citing that rose rosette disease/virus was seen in Manitoba in the 1940s,

From what I've seen, Morden Blush does not have a large amount of thorns. It's also odd that this would happen to one rose and not the other (especially if they are in similar locations). I think you did the right thing in removing it.

Interesting article, thanks prairienorthrose. My other Blush definitely doesn't have thorns like that. It looks completely fine. They are beside each other, but don't touch and I had some tall dahlias between them last year so hopefully it will do okay. As long as it's not sitting latent. Strange that the whole plant just came up like that this year, instead of one or two canes. Unless something was there in the fall that I didn't notice.

@VStapes (z3 Mb) It was actually a fertilizer deficiency of nitrgen which given a balanced rose fertilizer w/ NPK will recover. It has hapoened to me once. No problem….it grew out of it. New growth will be yellowish, light green, spindly stems, sm malformed leaves. As it grows it would have filled out to normal size leaves and all w/ a healthy fertilizer.
