Has anyone ever used a 24" inch Ikea base for a wall oven?

Just wanted to say that you probably won't find anyone who's got long term experience with this, since there was a special 24" oven base in the old akurum line, so it's only been gone since Sektion came out. They dropped their 24" ovens, too.

I haven't studied the appliance bases but I won't let my ignorance stop me spouting off.

I'd be less worried about the braces and open back. You could study the bracing of the Ikea oven bases and replicate the braces with stuff from your local hardware store. If the opening at the back is very large you may have to run some struts across the back to make up for the lost stability.

I'd be more worried about the clearance to the sides of the cabinet. Particle board scorches easily and, depending on the adhesive, has generally poor heat resistance. I'd make sure that you meet all of the oven's clearances and use an insulation with an appropriate heat rating. Do the ikea bases have any metal crashing or anything of that sort?

Since a 30'' oven is the new standard size except for expensive specialty appliances, you are not only taking a chance structurally altering a frameless cabinet, but also in planning in plenty of obsolescence as far as replacement choices. Plan on mainstream appliance sizes for the most longevity of your design. Otherwise you are being too concerned with the present costs to the detriment of the long term costs.

Marcosmcqueen, I'm a little worried about the heat from the oven too. Looking at the cutsheet for the oven, it is about 20" wide and should have a little over 1" on either side. I don't think there is any kind of metal on the sides of the base cabs, but what is a metal crashing?

TKP, we've looked at several local dealers (for framed and frameless) and none of them come close to the price of the Ikea cabinets. We had considered Merillat Classic at one point (one of the cheaper options), but I've since decided against framed cabinets, and plus I don't think the Merillats are great quality anyways. Going with Ikea was actually a fairly recent change. We had designed uppers into this kitchen remodel and with Ikea the 15" deep uppers wouldn't have worked out for me, but now that i no longer want uppers, it is possible.

Sophie, we would love to have the room for a 30" oven, but this is a small kitchen and I'd rather have more drawer/cabinet space. Plus, we already made our oven and cooktop purchase a few months back, so there is no turning back :)

Skip doing Ikea in favor of a line that has more options to do what you ask of it. Ikea doesn't have enough options for truly small kitchens whout compromising something that doesn't need to be compromised. Structural integrity vs. wasting space is not a conundrum that you should find yourself in.

susanlynn2012 - What did you do in the end?? I too am looking at getting an IKEA kitchen... with a 24" wall oven. I'm surprised they discontinued their base cabinet for 24-inch ovens.

romai, if you want frameless, Barker Cabinets makes 24" base cooktop + oven combo cabinets (along with all other kitchen cabinets, in customizable sizes). This company has had good feedback here over the years, price is a bit more than Ikea but less than most others -- they are also an assemble yourself product.

Hm, looks like the IKEA UK site offers the same base cabinet for sink or oven. I'd compare this to the US 30" cabinet and see what's different or how to modify it.

I’m looking to do the same - I’m not as worried about the heat resistance as the ikea oven cabinet (30”) is the same materials as all the others, and fits their current built in oven appliance that is a 30” oven on display. Which really, doesn’t suggest a whole lot of extra breathing room.. Agreed with above comment that it’s a good idea to leave back open and add the appropriate bracing. Keeping in mind to read and adhere to the instructions for your particular oven (there will always be specific electrical requirements and install details on surrounding space needed as with any appliance) I’m feeling confident it should be fine. Would still love to hear from anyone who’s actually done it and lived with it long enough to comment though!?
