Gaping hole in October Glory Bark

last modified: 11 years ago

This tree was planted three years ago - it was a 2"-2.5" tree at that point. I noticed the beginnings of this gash in the bark about 2 years ago. I don't know what caused it, but it continues to get bigger and uglier.

The overall tree continues to grow well, but the last two seasons I've noticed a few dead sections in the branches - likely only 5% of total leaf area, but still something.

We live in a subdivision with smaller lots - this tree will be able to cause damage if it loses branches in the distant future. Should I just replant something else and cut my losses?
