It seems to be the natural sequence for this particular cultivar :-) My 5 year old plant always starts out with solid red flowers in late spring, then changes to the bicolor flowers for most of the summer before becoming pure white. It has gone through this color change every year.

Because of the unseasonable heat and dryness we have experienced so far this season in the PNW, my plant is currently more white than bicolored. The hummingbirds don't seem to care about the color change, but I am considering trimming the plant back to flush out some new buds that will hopefully turn out to be bicolored rather than solid white.

What you have is Salvia 'Hot Lips', not Lipstick. This change of colours is normal, nobody is sure why....something to do with temperatures and sunshine day-length, but the white is very pure white,

Since I originally posted this, my Hot Lips has begun to produce red and red/white flowers. It's looking great! The weather has been hot...high 90s and low 100s. The hummingbirds and black bees love it too!
