Mango squirrel deterrent not working.

Encasing mangos in screen was an idea I saw on this fourm, so I tried it as the furry creatures were eating all my early mangos. They seem deterred for a while, but now something (maybe squirrels or possibly rats?) is biting through the screen. Has anyone had experience with this technique?

wow didn't even know squirrels eat mangoes. I think ive seen about 3 squirrels in the 5 yrs Ive lived in FL LOL. Iguanas look to steal mangoes but I just send the dogs out in the yard and they chase them away ( there is a fence between dog and iguanas so nobody can get hurt ) I'm not sure what to tell you other than if pets are in the yard more perhaps it will scare squirrels away OR.... you could buy huge bag of squirrel chow and dump it as far from the mango tree as you can so they stay over there and are too full on it to want mango. When I lived in NY I liked the squirrels so I would buy a 20lb bag ( it was mainly corn and stuff) from petco and I'd dump it in a big circle in the yard so I could watch a circle of squirrels having a pow wow LOL. good luck

we have a squirrel that, if we leave our garage door open, will get into the trash. Please note that we have a large plastic garbage container with a cover, and it "locks" on. The teens left the door open one morning, apparently the squirrels really wanted the corn cobs that were in the trash can and ATE right thru the trash can to get to the corn cobs! Those suckers are determined, and a real PAIN! I thought they were pretty cute til this biligerant little guy started stalking our trash

The rat bas+@r#!s get my Desert Snow peaches every year... grrrrr...

That is why I love when the hawks and owls show up. They get the squirrels. I have never under stood why some one would feed them here in Fl, it doesn't get cold, they don't have a lot natural enemies and have plenty of food.

I battle with them every year!!!! They eat my Lychees and Mangoes, its SO frustrating!!!

These plastic produce clam shells are not full proof but work for me about 70% of the time, they still get to some of them (they chew through the plastic) sometimes but at least

most of them are spared. Be careful and make sure they have holes in them or they can get sunburn and heat up due to the plastic...

    Puglvr,

Your doesn't look like squirrel damage. Did you see them do this?

Looks like a bigger critter, maybe raccoon or possums.

Around here the woodpeckers do more damage to the mangos that anything.

You are right TC...I'm not positive that particular one is squirrel...I have many critters in my yard lol...but I have definitely seen the squirrels climbing the tree and have seen them using their paw to knock down the plastic clam shells. But its possible other critters come out at night at attack them too...I've found chewed clam shells, mangoes and netting...they eat anything they can...UGH!!

I used the aluminum window screen the first year and it was foolproof...all of them made it. The second year...they got smarter and realized they can chew through them that's when I switched over to the plastic Clam shells...

I bought several squirrel traps by Hav-a Hart and using peanut butter on apple slices caught 22 squirrels last year. Also using the fruit they are eating is good too if they,ve already tasted it. Hauled them off to a preserve about 5 miles away and remained free of them through avocado season. This year my lychee had the biggest crop ever so I let the new spring crop of squirrels and woodpeckers have the upper fruit and I harvested the lower branches before they worked them over. One thing that slowed the climbing critters from getting up my avocado tree was wrapping a 2-foot width of aluminum sheet metal around the trunk and where it came together, took vinyl-coated clothesline wire and tied it together through pre-drilled holes, tight enough so it wouldn"t slip down the trunk. Weekly I painted used motor oil or smeared Vaseline on it so they couldn,t get a grip to climb. They probably took to the traps better probably out of frustration. If you have nearby limbs from another tree, you,ll need to trim them back further then they can jump. Besides raccoons and possums, the gray squirrel is the most destructive and persistent rodent on the face of the earth!!!

    Hi

Have had no trouble with them eating the fruit but do have a problem with them pulling my orchids and other epiphytes off the trees . Think I solved that by encasing them in hardware cloth. No casualties over tha last couple of years .

Think I would give the title of "Most destructive rodent" To norway rats . They killed 4 of my sugar birds in one night and destroyed both nests

Interestingly they didn't eat them they just tore the insides out and left the remains . They also chewed through some wiring in the attic causing a fire!!

    They get my vote!!! gary

Perhaps Larue you have a license to do removal of pests, but the rest of us here on GW can't do what you just did. There is a $500 fine if caught transporting pests and releasing them in another area. :o)

My husband has relocated squirrels this way as well and he has no license, so I thought I better look it up and this is what I found on Florida Fish and Wildlife's site: "A landowner may lawfully live-trap or humanely destroy nuisance
gray squirrels without a special permit or license. Live-captured
nuisance squirrels must be released or euthanized within 24 hours
of capture or trap inspection. In addition, nuisance
squirrels may be transported and released at an off-site location..." http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/mammals/land/squirrels/ Whew! Happy trapping! :)

Hmm, glad to know that. The info I summited was given to me by animal control in PSL. But maybe they meant just raccoons.
