Dumb move?

I bought a Dancing Snow/Wedding gown hydrangea a week ago and planted in shade under a crape myrtle. While digging a hole for the plant I came across an underground tunnel I think from a ground squirrel or something. I remember the critter popping his head up but think a cat got him because I haven't seen it in years. i watered before I put the plant in to see how the hole would drain. It drained fast at first . I tried to collapse the tunnel and put in dirt . Eventually it stopped draining like crazy but I still wonder if this was a dumb move to plant in over an area that may drain too fast. The plant was looking wilted yesterday but it was about 100 degrees here. In photo taken last week it's the plant on the far left. Hellebores, heuchera and tiarella under the tree do fine.
