Looking for ideas to enclose the center and add mantle. Husband wants to keep the brick. It needs a major update. HELP

It's actually an interesting feature! I would run a simple mantel (think a beam) all the way across the width of the fireplace. Notch out the area where the brick juts out. Paint the mantel and the inset wood area in a great dark charcoal color (like BM dragon's breath or Kendall charcoal). Then hang a large piece of art above. The horizontal mantel cutting across will break up all the vertical elements and the dark color will create a backdrop in that niche.

I agree about hanging a large piece of art above, but what I would personally do is paint the brick white. It all depends on the direction you want the room decor to go!

HI -- Take the diagonal wood off or cover and replace with a slab of walnut or mahogany or a slab of marble or granite or some sort of stone. Even smoke grey mirror is back and would look nice . The brick could be painted or not and that depends on you. Then a painting or a décor piece can be added . Not sure adding a mantel is proper for this style fireplace . Why do you want a mantel ?

I just feel a mantle is needed. Maybe I need to think outside the box.

I like your fireplace. It's unique. I agree with cbrooks0801 to add a wood beam mantle, but I wouldn't paint it. I'd stain it, picking up a dark color from your flooring.
