All Take and No Give

People on this forum have given me so much great advice, but I am starting to worry that people are going to think I am all "take" and no "give." People have been so helpful to me here, and I would love to help others in return. However, I really have no training or experience with building a house so I am afraid of leading people astray by giving my opinions. I guess I just want to say thanks and that I am sorry that I do not have much to offer in return.

Anyone else here ever feel like that?

Most definitely feel like that. Sometimes it's not what you know as a professional but as a homeowner who has experience with particular questions asked so more of opinion, suggestions or ideas based off of your own first hand life experience. There are different levels of experience and different levels of questions. So you may know what you do and do not like but not really the expertise in how to get from A to B. There are all kinds of questions asked on here, some technical, some style or function related and everywhere in between. Give where you see fit, where you are comfortable doing so. Sometimes the opinion or idea can grow into something else that someone has more technical knowledge of to bring it from an idea to reality. :)

I only have given asthetic advice, and even that I am not qualified to do! I feel like a leech! ;)

No one will see you as an "all take and no give" member. Just share your opinion when you have one and it might help in some way or be food for thought that leads to the needed answer.

Never saw GardenWeb as a professional advice column. I don't think it was intended to be at its origination, although there are a lot of helpful pros who visit. Just a few are here to show off their expertise at the expense of the less knowlegable. It is a great place to offer support and gain insight. Good place to share stories and vent too. So no, there are a variety of ways to contribute that don't require a degree in structural engineering. All the best.

oh my - I feel the same way so I am glad to see that others do too. I always feel like what I say is either too vague or dumb and a lot of times I will write out a response and then just erase it as I feel like it is not worthy of contributing. But I have learned that we all are here to help each other and should not feel bad at all. :)

I view this site like talking to a friend. Yes, you don't have all the answers but the few experiences you've had are valuable to someone who has not been down that road. Personally, I will ask 100 questions to keep from making a mistake or bad decision.

You know, the questions you ask may make another member think of something they haven't thought of before that they need to consider. A question from one poster about whether it was safe or not to put a w/d set on the second floor made me reconsider my husband's suggestion to set up a space on the second floor for my sons to have their own w/d.

"Great answer have come from stupid questions."
