One of the most important things a new gardener needs to learn is patience! Vines take time to establish - anywhere from 3-5 years, depending on the vine. If these vines were newly planted this season, I wouldn't expect to see a great deal of growth. Most vines produce pretty hefty root systems to support that mass of top growth and are spending their first season busy developing this root system rather than producing a lot of flowery growth. Next season will be better and the one following that even better.

yes listen to gardengal! Also, when some describe plants as being hardy they mean that they will survive frost or winter chill. Enjoy your plants :-)

If you have room think about adding some restrained annuals to the area for now. It will give you some color and flowers to help with the patience part. Just be sure that you give your vines plenty of room and don't plant such exuberant annuals that they shade out your little vines.
