I feel like the shelves would stand out more if they were thicker (wood perhaps) and if they went all the way across or were centered instead of different random placement. I think the furniture and chairs look really nice though!

can we have better pictures of the wall? are those green chairs? I see nothing to unify them to the rest of the ensemble.

Those recessed areas need built ins. More substantial and would look more finished to me.

It's the grey chairs and the walls that I think could use some tweaking. I think the problem with the patterned chairs and the sofa both being in "warm" tones and the grey chairs as "cool" tones, it creates a visual havoc. Also, with such light shelves on the feature wall. Try using an accent color in the recesses to "beef" that area up visually, that way you don't have to use additional clutter to fill in the shelves.

I agree with Caleb, I don't get the new concept that you have to have cool mixed in with warm, or vice versa. Also feel that the shelves and their inhabitants are too delicate to match the rest of the room? hope this helps.

Agree with Caleb the gray chairs should go to another room. Too large and wrong style. TV would be better placed in the niche on the right of FP. Clock needs to go somewhere else. Move print chairs & table & lamp to where gray chairs are now and get 1 swivel chair for stair wall. Coffee table should be 18" from sofa not stuck in middle of room.

You know, i think i just saw the main problem with the wall. 2 black pits dead center, the fp and the tv. So maybe larger, darker more weighty items on sides. If we were all rich I would say to large statues, but I am thinking that is a no, it would be with me, anyone else? A large palm on one side? very large blk and white art? are you getting the idea? or the other direction, large paintings that tie to your furnishings and wall color. let me know if you want to try more

To me there are two different rooms trying to occupy the same space - one has lovely inviting gray chairs, light artistic shelving and a very modern feel; the other is quite traditional with floral chairs and a comfy couch. Unfortunately, only one room can use the space at any given moment so there is some visual confusion.

I would suggest deciding which room you want to be there now (nothing saying you can't switch 'em around in the future) and go from there. Either one could be nice. You have received good advice for playing up the more traditional look; if you prefer the modern style, keep the shelves and the gray chairs, and replace the other pieces with something light but comfortable (maybe something from ikea which wouldn't be too big of an investment).

too much going on with the walls. you need to create a focal point on that wall, and your eyes are just drawn all over the place cause stuff is everywhere

I agree with many and most previous comments. I will say for sure thou have too much furniture in the room, and the grey chairs while nice don't belong in that room. There shouldn't be anything along your stair wall ( where your orange pattern chairs are) other than like a hall table. Narrow so it doesn't protrude too much but deep enough for med size lamp. Set a favorite photo or artwork on it or hang one on the wall over it, but keep it to scale so it doesn't tower up to the level of staircase. The patterned chairs you could use two ways ( I think) both in front of window with a table between. The chairs don't have to be right up against the window either. Put another side table at end of sofa, that's where I would put a lamp. The recessed lights will be enough for the far corner and being by the window I wouldn't break up the view with a lamp stuck in the center. Or you can sit one on each side of coffee table facing each other to create a cozy space (As long as there is adequate space so it doesn't interfere with walking space) either way lamp should go by the side of sofa closest to window. And yes ma'am you need to either replace shelves with bookcase, or traditional shelves, or no shelves and place artwork in the space. The glass shelves are too lightweight for the room and furnishings so they're not to scale. Move the clock. If you need it in the room then maybe hang it on the higher point of stair wall and nothing else. I also think you should consider replacing the mirrored cabinet doors with painted wood., especially if you put in bookcase or shelving. They just look out of place to me. All of this is my opinion and suggestions. I'm not an interior designer.

u poor thing marfeli, remember, you did do a lot of great stuff on your own, I am sure we are being quite overwhelming, but, well, you did ask. try to have fun with it all.

Am not sure that either niche needs shelves at all. Why not have pictures and lamps and just a few things on each mirrored cabinet? You could move your large wall-mounted decorative clock into one of the niches (it is not in its best location).

Also, as an experiment, what happens if you take out one of the gray chairs and put a side table with a lamp next to the one that's left?

I like it. I think the purple glowy fireplace looks odd since there is nothing else purple in the room. The immediate fix would be to change the flames to an orange or red glow to match what is the otherwise a warm, natural looking room. You could always find new cooler toned pieces but I love what you have now! Would it be possible for you to change fireplace flames?

Wow! I am so overwhelmed with joy that I got so many good input and suggestions. I would sieve through all the suggestions and pick what works for me. Again thank you all. The flame colors are changeable

I think your chairs are off. Two look traditional and two look modern. Pick your style and move the other two out of the room.
