Water-absorbing plants

Hi, does anyone have any bog plants that they would like to share? We have a lot of storm water run-off from new building in our area encroaching on our now soggy land on the Severna River. This is Maryland coastal zone, lots of sand, and we need ferns, shrubs, etc. We are trying to build a dike of logs, cover it with dirt, and dig in plants that will reach down and suck up water. We've planted baldy cypress and swamp oak that are now about five feet tall after two years and lots of iris, but we need many more underplantings.

I'm also interested in advice about what additional plants to add to our buffer zone.

Thanks, Lisa
