Well, I`m not sure - it reminds me of Manitoba maple, a tree that was planted heavily around here decades ago, because, well, you know, it would survive and there wasn`t a lot of choice - seeds like crazy and repsprouts equally as well! Cut it off and dab Round Up on the stems and that should take care of it.

I am also curious what this is, we had something the same or similar growing up. Does it get flowers? Are the canes somewhat soft?

earlier in the spring it had what sort of looked like purple flowers. Some of the canes are soft, then there is an odd big one that is a bit tougher to snip. This is what it looked like before the leaves started growing.

I thought it was sort of pretty but then the greens started and its out of control.

The speed that it grows and the smell of the inside is what makes me think its a weed but I just wish I knew for sure.

Hard to tell, need a close up of the leaves and if it has flowers in a round cluster Konrad is probably correct. I thought ash tree.

I am with Konrad - it looks like an elderberry - I got 3 of them (with cutleaf) and they all start off like that during spring....
