never grew it.. but i dont see anything that would set off bells and whistles.. to my eye

I've never grown Gaura either but it looks like natural ageing - it happens to all of us but unfortunately we are not as easy to renovate as perennials. Have you cut it back ever to renew the growth? Have you ever divided it and kept only the outer portions? You could split that clump and get two or three plants out of it. To my eye repetition of plants looks visually more pleasing and restful than one of each anyway. So you could kill two birds with one stone.

I only planted it in the Fall of 2013 so this is only it's 2nd full season. I will cut it back this Fall and maybe divide it.

I don't know where you live or your climate. You can cut it back after the first flush of flowering to increase bushiness and maybe get second flush. But in some regions it is better to do major cutting back and division in the spring. Since this is a perennial you might find someone on that forum in your area who can help.
