Psycho -- blooming finally :)

My 2 year 'psycho' cutting finally showing inflo, can't wait to see it bloom. My hearty thanks go to Laura who shared this cutting with me. I heard so many good things about it and anyone else from zone 7 growing this and share their experiences?

Yea!! You will love Psycho!! She is a very profuse bloomer and now that she is maturing, she will start to explode with inflos.

Be careful of your branches, Kandhi.. With the inflos making the branches heavier and the heat we are having, it might put stress on your branches. I would tie them up together to bring the branches closer together and or stake. They will harden off after being trained.

It looks so healthy.. Congratulations!! Enjoy your beautiful " Psycho".

Mine is doing great but it was so large that I had to trim mine back,. I can't get those VW's in the house when they get like that!!! ;-)

    Enjoy your beauty!!

Laura, Looks like they we open anytime if only we don't have this continuous rain.. I just placed the plant to take the pic for posting. It is actually tied to deck rail now. I will update once i get blooms..

Tdogdad, Grandmother looks still young and beautiful :) Seems very compact and healthy, how is the fragrance?

So glad you are getting some inflos! Keep posting photos. Looks like you have a lot more room on that deck for more plants. Just sayin'....

Kandhi- psycho has been cut back many times in her 15 years in my efforts to keep her in a manageable shape. The flower is not a good lei flower as it is not waxy enough but the scent is a jasmine/gardenia scent that is very strong. She is actually probably a Gardena from Gardena, Calif., but my wife called it psycho because it is still leafed out and flowering when all the other plants are bare and dormant. In 2013 it flowered all year. It is a crazy plant.

Sure Dave, I will post once it blooms. I have noticed all my plumeria's with inflo's this year and that is quite exciting for me. My deck need more plants... my husband already fussing that I make him move too many plants in and out every year so no more except looking for 'penang peach' because you rave about it every year and it's too tempting not to get one:)

tdogdad, I sure thought that plant is old but not 15years, wow.. I love jasmines and gardenia's and I have all varieties of jasmines at home so sure looking forward to check on the fragrance of my little 'psycho' plant. Glad to hear that its a prolific bloomer..

    Laura, this is for you:)

Oh my Laura does this look like Werner's Pink Pony....?????

Kandhi, that's lovely! She looks really healthy all around.

Rox, I've seen pics of the one called Pink Pony and I agree they look close but Psycho seems to have a darker stripe on the back, and no pink tint to the face of the petals. Psycho is definitely the same as Gardena, though.

I recently was admonished by a plumeria person for calling my plumeria psycho. So here is the history. I bought it from Marilyn's garden in the late '90s as a No-id she called white with red stripes. A few years later my wife called it psycho because it was blooming when all the others were dormant. Years later I sent boxes of cuttings around the country to people like Laura as a no-id we call psycho. Almost a decade later, George C. said it was maybe from the city of Gardena and informally called Gardena. I saw it being sold as Gardenia and Trumpet which were other flowers. I checked the registered plants at the PSA and it was not registered. From then on, I told people it was probably Gardena or a seedling of that, but it was not registered so we still referred to it as psycho. I did not purposely change a name and there is no way to know if it was a cutting or a seedling. Frankly, I really do not care, but my plant will always be psycho to me. If Gardena had been registered, it would have been incorrect to call my plant that because I do not know if it was a cutting or a seedling. The registered name is supposed to protect the plant name from being sold as anything but cuttings from that plant. No-ids are not allowed to use that name just because it looks similar. Enough said.

Dave, Hooked, is that good thing or bad thing :)

tdogdad, This baby can never grow that big in our area, someday I have to move to Florida to have them grow outdoors.

Laura.. Thanks, you know how it feels to see the blooms so perfect ..

This year my 'pyscho' did not produce any inflo's. Do plumeria's skip blooming in between years? The plant is growing good with lot of leaf growth but no sign of buds, wondering why?

    Hi Kandhi!!

My Beautiful Psycho has taken a year off as well... I don't think it's unusual for trees to take a break sometimes, so I wouldn't worry!! We have had some crazy weather with high temperatures and high humidity and that's making other varieties push inflos this summer!!

I wouldn't be surprised if we both see her pushing inflos soon... She is one to do what's she likes!!! ;-)

    good luck!!

Bill. Your tree is the perfect psycho tree ever!! <3

Have a great day everyone !!

Laura, thanks for responding. I didn't know that they take break sometimes. All my other plumerias are blooming except this one so it was kind a unusual I thought. Its doing good I can wait..

    Hi Kandhi!!

We also have to remember that we grow in containers which might play a part as well as having a long dormant period! We are lucky to have the blooms we have when our trees are inside for 6 months of the year. So my hats off to you for having and seeing the results from your gorgeous trees!! If we had our trees planted In The ground like some other lucky people, you would probably see blooms every year after it matured!! But I think since we have a few limitations, it might play a big part in the reduction of blooms. I still have varieties that have never bloomed and also others that have bloomed before and have taken a break..

i have had more success with plunging my containers which makes the root system feel like it's planted in the ground more so than just a raised container sitting on the deck.. Plunging makes the roots more active and makes the trees grow more vigorously ... ;-)

if you want to see a picture of my planters that I plunged my trees, I'll take a picture for you later this evening!!

Bravo to you for growing in Virginia!!

Hi, where can I buy a Psycho?

You can check Sales group on FB For Plumeria. Most of these are from California. Some are called Psycho or Gardena... The trees are from the City of Gardena, California.

    Hope this helps!!

    Laura.
