mcmcdole, can you see the small pot (in the middle of the picture) almost covered by the thanksgiving cacti? That is another bulb of the Picotee begonia. The bag I bought had 3 bulbs. The bulbs all produced shoots but one died. The other two are as I reported right now.
have you gotten a lot of rain? I'm in Iowa and it hasn't been as wet as some states this summer, but it has been more than we usually get. I was spraying with a fungicide earlier, but still have lost quite a few leaves. I planted many tuberous begonias this year. Some were saved ones from last year, and many are new ones from Cal Begonia. Last year's are definitely not faring well. The Cal Begonias are just now starting to bloom. Most of those are really nice plants and I am happy with them. I am wondering if this is a hard year on the tuberous begonias though (because of so much rain). I am fertilizing with romeo 18-18-18 and have them in only filtered sun. I am going to save all my tubers inside in peat over the winter- even the ones that get fungus- and will plant them again next spring. I can't think that we'll have 2 years in a row with this much rain!
I lost more leaves even from my begonias that were doing well. I didn't keep up with the spraying so maybe that didn't help. I am a bit disappointed this year with them, but hopeful maybe next year will be better. jujujojo, how are ours faring? I think we can still use the tubers next year even if they completely die from mildew this year. Does anyone have information on this?
