would this chandelier work?

So I have the opportunity to get this chandelier for free. It was valued at $8000. I love the look of mixing plain with something fancy, I'm just not sure I can pull it off.

My main worry is that now that we have taken down the wall between kitchen and dining room, it will look funny with the plain kitchen fixtures we have.

There are pics of the dining room and living room in this thread. house pics before renovation

The sofa is going to be a bit smaller, track arm and slipped in off white linen. Table and chairs will stay the same. I think we are painting walls white.

Ya, I was kind of afraid not. Maybe in another house. It's my MIL's and she really wants me to use it. I still have the one in the original pics, but it is ORB and I really want shiny brass. I still haven't looked into getting it replated as some suggested in another thread. Thanks!

Could you use it in a diffrent room? LR, BR or even a foyer?

There is nothing more burdensome than taking rich people's cast offs. They can't stand parting with stuff and then you are stuck with them. Only take what you really love. Don't try to please the MIL by taking it. It will never seem right.

lascatx, we have a fairly large 2nd floor landing and I had considered putting it there, but it is quite big. Also, I have to deal with the emotions of my MIL. Would she be insulted if I hung her treasured piece on a landing instead of the dining room?

Bedroom would be cool, but we've just cut the size of our master in half to accommodate a new master bath and, again, I think it might overwhelm the space. Also, I'm not sure I could sleep under that thing without worrying it was going to fall and crush me :)

I don't think it goes with your style. And knowing that it is coming from a family member, I would not take it. Because then you are stuck with it--or at least I would feel like I couldn't get rid of it down the line without offending the family member.

that is quite ornate-- I think your style would have to be either very formal or very eclectic to pull it off...

We put a large chandelier in our BR -- had it professionally hung to make sure it was up there to stay. Only took me a few days to stop thinking of it falling.

If you like it, then I wouldn't worry about the placement in your home offending your MIL (unless she's saying "for your DR"). But it either works for you or it doesn't. Do you love it? Does it fit your vision of what your home should be? Would it make you smile -- or would it feel like a ball and chain?

Your home looks Arts + Crafts?

It is a lovely chandelier, but quite formal and not in keeping with the feel of your home.

    Square peg, round hole.

    Nope ;-(

Hmmm, I'm thinking it might be more ball and chain. If I had concrete floors and minimalistic white walls, I could do it. But you guys are right, it just isn't going to work here.

I'm really striking out with lighting today (see vanity insanity thread :)

If I decide to just splurge I think I'll do this.

and this for over the island

except now that i see them together I'm not sure if they really go.

    Nice!

I think those two go together perfectly. And I like them a lot. They do feel somewhat modern to me.

Yay! a touch of modern is just what I was going for. They aren't cheap, but aren't totally out of reach either.

I think those will look nice together too! elegantly simple!

I'd take it, sell it on CL and buy what I wanted. :)

I really like those last two and think they would look nice in your home!!

You are all over the place with lighting, aren't you! I feel for you. Those last 2 lights are modern cool. You are embracing the brushed/antiquey gold!
