If they are the same color I would find homes for half of them. Sounds like you have a vigorous multiplier.

If you pre-trim roots and fans that will help. And cut the rhizomes about 4" long - let cure in the shade overnight or longer. 3 rhizomes can be planted in an outfacing triangular pattern. Fans facing outwards and the cured trimmed ends touching in the middle. Good luck.

I divided and thinned out my grandmother's iris bed about five years ago and ended up giving some away to anyone who wanted them. The rest I planted in a small nursery bed I had empty and spaced them about six inches apart. By the time the following spring rolled around, I had a bed prepared for them and all had excellent root systems. So, this might buy you a little time to prepare a new bed.

Thanks Ladies. I actually have not planted them yet. They are in the garage and I will be digging a spot for them this weekend. They are almost all bearded germans that are lavender. A handful are big white bearded but those I am keeping in a special spot. They are doing fine in the garage, in shade, with air circulation. I will space them 6 or so apart and decide where new beds are going to be added. I'm overrun with iris and hosta.
