Bon it looks like thyme to me. The stems don't look very woody

Oh how the simple things elude me. I crushed. Nothing distinctive but a sweet vegetative smell. I crushed a flower. Nada. I grew this from seed. It was one that surprised me. I'm assuming it likes dry. If not rosemary, lavender? A certain type of thyme? I'm not certain how fresh thyme should smell. It might qualify.

It looks kind of like blue flax growing in too much shade.

Okay. I'll move it into more sunlight. If I don't kill it, I can tell when it matures.

thanks, everyone. Part of them stood up and opened the flowers a bit where it was readily obvious: blue flax. I wouldn't have known to consider flax. I guess it was a whimsical seeding. *sigh*

There's nothing wrong with whimsy. Blue is not the most common flower color is summer so enjoy it.

Its a short lived perennial, common in mixed packets of wildflowers -- did you plant any mixed wildflower seed? That little round seedpod is what gave it away for me. They don't usually bloom the first year unless seed is sown in fall and the small plants winter over. The seed pods are filled with tiny seeds and they germinate easily. The flowers are profuse but each only lasts a day. In full sun it makes a very pretty & airy vase shaped plant.

They came from grocery store-bought seeds. Bob's Red Mill, I believe it was. I must have decided to plant some after the original seedling died. I'm guessing the cabinet which they overwintered must have gotten cold enough. Interesting, no? I like them. I'll winter sow some around my new cold frame spot where they'll get much sun.

It'd be better to direct sow where they are to grow. I treat it like a biennial or hardy annual. I have very good luck sowing these kinds of easy seeds in late summer/early fall, plants winter over in the ground and take off come spring. No muss, no fuss. Mine come up in fall and are up and blooming in early to mid spring.
