This is a mutation that happens with orchids. If put on the show bench the plant will probably be ignored by Judging Panels. Because the lip is an altered petal sometimes these orchids are used for further breeding to get the colours from the lip on to normal shaped petals.

Here is a pic showing the colour from the labellum carried onto the petals. Bought a batch of seedlings and some were discarded because the petals were too distorted.

Cattleya intermedia variety aquinii

That orange lip is so striking against the white bloom. Arthur, those are very nice photos of pretty intermedias. While I'd not choose to purchase the mutated phal, I would enjoy having that intermedia var. aquinii. I find those particular splashed, peloric type petals pretty. Beauty in the eye of the beholder! I also don't grow orchids for judging ;) rather for personal enjoyment!
