Should be helpful. Like many large tree, you might not get the bloom from planting trees in your average pot. I doubt you want the puakenikeni as an evergreen.

I've grown a kuakenikeni tree in a 5 gallon tub. It gave me flowers. But after some years it will out grow the tub.

I found a great source for large, durable, inexpensive pots: the used appliance place. They often have washer and dryer tubs for cheap (Smiths in Hilo charges $5 each). Some actually look cute, some are stainless steel, some are enamel. All have holes for drainage. I call them "Puna Planters"

Washer tubs range from maybe 10 gallons to 30 gallons (at a guess), and usually have a center spindle that could probably be removed (but I just use them for smaller plants). Dryer tubs are larger (40-50 gallons?) and have no spindle, often no bottom.
