Finally Some Blooms

Have been battling JBs for the last month. Last 3 weeks were terrible. But my efforts have appeared
to show some results: the numbers of JBs are diminishing! And a few rosebuds were able to open without damages!

Crocus Rose

Molineux

Quietness

Tranquility

    Perfect blooms Karen!

I can imagine how frustrating it is having your blooms eaten by beetles because I have Vine Weevils and they are having a good go at the leaves right now!

Glad those Jb's have slacked off so you can have some blooms!

Fantastic looking blooms by the way Karen... :-)

Girl I feel your pain. The beetles have finally slacked off here too and it's about time. It's sooooo frustrating. Your roses are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing, Judy

Thank you everyone for your encouragement and support. For awhile I thought there is no hope. I knocked them into my soapy bucket and more would come. There were days that I would be out there 2-3 times knocking them into my soapy buckets and there would still be more coming the following days. There are two beds of roses that they totally decimated, foliage and buds. I hope that all this effort will take care of next years population.

Sharlene, I am sorry to hear that your roses are not spared from insect damages in your area. Do these weevils come and go as JBs do or do they hang around all growing season?

msdorkgirl, I will check on the size of the roses tomorrow. They are all newly planted this year so they are not big.

msdorkgirl, the blooms size of Crocus Rose and Tranquility is about the same, 2-2.5" in diameter at this time. I hope the blooms of both get bigger in the years to come when they are fully established.

Aaahhh small but beautiful Austin booms...

Crocus Rose in the Urban Garden Center is about 2, to 2.5" and he's like three years old grown in the ground with octopus arms ...

And Tranquility bought this year gave me one bloom at 2.5" too

I am a bit bummed that apparently I will not be having any big bloom, vase ready Austins. Thank you for measuring :)

Crocus rose bloom size is 3.5" according to HMF and 4" for Tranquility rose according to Heirloom roses. For me, Crocus rose shatters in 3 days from ready to open bud stage, not good for vase I am afraid. Tranquility lasts much longer, 5-6 days.

..lovely roses, that Molineux always seems to look nice...

..regarding Tranquillity... they should be like mine here...quite large and full and scented too, when it wants... I do find the unsprayed foliage to be black spot prone here... but not too much to be serious...

Especially liking your 'Crocus' bloom. Yummy color.

Karen, the vine weevils are here to stay until I do something to get rid of them! The beetles emerge around mid/end June, start feeding on the leaves then lay their eggs. Then you have the grubs which are most active in Sep/Oct and Mar/Apr and feed on the roots. AND then the whole cycle starts again. I tried spraying a few years ago but don't like using poisons and it didn't seem to help that much. I want to try nematodes this autumn and will probably have to do a repeat in spring.

Has anyone else had experience using nematodes?

Marlorena, that Tranquility is gorgeous! Hope mine turns out as nice as yours. It has a good repeat too. I am glad that I got it this spring.

Sharlene, I googled your vine weevils and discovered that I have seen those beetles around my garden too. Though they are not as bad as the JBs over here. When I turn up the soil or weed, I will see them running out but not many. Wow, I did not know that they are a rose pest in your area of the world.

Karen (late with replying, sorry) IF YOU SEE A VINE WEEVIL, SQUISH IT DEAD - QUICKLY!!!!!! There used to only be a few around but now they are every where - this is what they do ...

    to my Heucheras

    to my roses

The other thing that is giving me a real pain right now is the boxwood caterpillar! First turned up in our area three years ago!!

If it's not one thing, it's another - but that's life! My motto is 'Deal with it!'

Thank you for the warning, Sharlene. I sure do not want another rose loving insect to multiply in my area. I sure have enough bad insects to deal with.
