Don't you just love the differences between the seedlings as they grow. This is one of the things I like about starting my own.

Thank you, Rick. I do enjoy observing the seedlings and all the differences between them. These A. somalense have unique looking leaves, they are longer and thinner than the other Adeniums. Even comparing obesums to obesums I am able to find many variations that just tickle me. It is really nice to have people here that get that.

tracy: what are you using for soil. cactus mix and perlite?

Dave, I am currently using a mixture of coco coir and perlite for my seedlings. They seem to do well in the mix. In the past when I tried using peat based seed mix I had trouble with damping off. No problems since using coco coir.

Jericson, I believe we are growing the exact same seeds, since they came from KO and he only has 1 species of somalense. I notice how some of your seedlings exhibit the curling leaves like mine. It is cool to compare them, especially this close in age. Yours are maybe a week older I think?

I have a photo update for my Somalense seedlings, they will be eight weeks old this Sunday. So far they are remaining very compact but growth is slow as well. A few are real fatties for being Somalense. I suspect that these seedlings are all hybrids. The leaves are longer and thinner than the other seedlings and the leaves seem to dance and form unique curls sometimes.

The twins are still small in comparison with their cohabitants.

I have one giving up turning yellow (3 o'clock in the pic below), but the rest are thriving extremely well.

Looking good! But I think that they are hybrids, not pure strain somalense. The light-colored veins are present in the leaves but in my opinion the leaves are too broad for somalense. For eight weeks old somalense seedlings they are also somewhat stunted in growth which could be another an indication of hybridization.

They are fairly stocky for 5 weeks Tracy.You seem to be doing a great job feeding them....do keep updating us!

Thanks Cynthia some are definitely getting quite chubby. They seem to like to stay buried in the soil while my obesums at this age tend to start getting taller.

Ladylotus, these are not under LEDs. I have them under fluorescent T8 lamps (3 bulbs). My grow rack is somewhat of a hodge-podge. It has 4 different fluorescent fixtures attached in a very ghetto like manner, but it gets the job done! The shelves are really only tall enough to keep seedlings on until they reach about a year old. I really need to find a lighting solution for all my seedlings when they hit juvenile age. So I am shopping around looking at LEDs and T5HOs with that in mind.

Martin, I agree that their growth has been somewhat stunted in comparison with my arabicum and obesum seedlings. I normally pick out 2 to 3 seedlings to watch that I think will be frontrunners in the group. I have to say that they don't look any bigger to me at 8 weeks than they did at 5 weeks. I might try giving them a very small dose of fertilizer to see if that triggers any response.

I will have another picture update in 2 to 3 weeks.

Tracy, maybe stunted but quite fat - the latter is of great importance. ;-)

Thanks, Rick. I would do a group photo update but they are all mixed in together so as I come across a somalense seedling I take a photo of it. I really love the way these are starting to look. They no longer resemble A. obesum, so they are unique in my collection.
