Often, vintage furniture can be a find...sturdy and functional and with a little TLC, will work into your design scheme. Try consignment shops for the chairs. Painted, they could be a knock-out and still give you the security you want.

Another thing to consider is that you get what you pay for. Don't buy cheap big box store chairs. Go to a nice furniture store and see what they have. If you watch furniture sales, you should be able to find something nice for a decent price.

We had the crossbars on our farm style dining room chairs come loose so my husband screwed them in. It seems to have worked. I think the wood glue didn't hold if I remember correctly.
