HI -- I have almost the same thing . Have some mirror or antiqued mirror cut to size and mounted on the back. Then display a large statue there . You could have a shelf built out like a table top .

Try painting it a contrast color like black on the back wall and the inside edges. You might add something like a panel of stained glass or frosted/etched white glass. As an alternative, you could paint the interior white and add a black wrought iron medallion or panel.

or flat round vase with some flower. You can paint inside indent with coordinated color.

houzz has been having some picture problems celerygirl. I have found that if I put in a couple of carriage returns, then some gibberish (see below), then put the cursor in the empty space, THEN try to add the pictures then they show up (please don't ask me why - I have no idea why it works, but it does).

Paint the inside in black or graphite dark grey, choose a semi shiny texture. Can you draw? With gold or silver marker copy some chinoiserie motive., like a pagoda or two peacocks......Too much? Go for a luxurious dark tone wallpaper, again I would choose Manuel Canovas or the sort, chinoiserie. Make ir dramatic!

I had the same thing in my house. I had 3 glass "shelves" cut to size and mounted them inside and then changed out what was on the shelves according to my mood and the seasons.

It is hard to do anything with these niches other than what they are intended for. Depending on your design style I would back it with some beautiful grass cloth wallpaper for a sophisticated look, beadboard if you like cottage style or rustic planks for a more relaxed look as a backdrop to a beautiful wall sconce or interesting piece of sculpture. I would stay away from the standard tall vase filled with fake reeds or feathers and opt for a true piece of art that can become a beautiful focal point, regardless of your design style. A modern sculpture against the grass cloth, a wrought iron candle sconce against the rustic planks, or a treasured antique against the beadboard, for example. Have fun!

Here is how we finished a niche for a recent Laguna Beach Client that wanted something unique. The wood varieties are African Babinga and mahogany.

We've had a similar design in a client's home. They had other portions of the interior accented with stone, and similar to you, they wanted something other than artwork or paint in this section. With the accent light, we think it's beautiful!
