Huge lumpy lemons

We have a lemon tree in our backyard that was here when we bought our house. Every year the tree produces oversized and very lumpy lemons. I'm hoping to find out if these are an unusual lemon variety or there is something the tree is lacking in nutrients to produce mainstream lemons. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for your quick reply. So are you staying the tree can only produce these type of lemons so if we don't want them we should replant with a new tree? I am not a gardener so I don't know what you mean when you say "the Rough Lemon rootstock from below the graft grew into this tree". Thanks again.

Almost certainly the tree died off above the graft and the Rough Lemon rootstock from below the graft grew into this tree.

Rough lemon is supposed to take very similar to lemon. From what I've read.

A commercial Citrus plant is a rootstock that is grown for its good features and then a cultivar is grafted to the rootstock. The roots and the tree are two different varieties combined into one tree. One has good roots, the other makes good fruit.

Rough Lemon is a typical one and is certainly a lot more palatable than many rootstocks. I have one that I let grow and my teenage son likes to eat them. They are mostly unattractive but the taste is reasonable for kids that like to eat sour things, basically sweeter than a Eureka. Mine is even sweeter than a Meyer. They aren't very juicy though so I don't care for them.

It might be worth keeping as some taste better than others. That tree looks nice so its harder to rip it out.

Here is a pic of rootstock trying to grow up past the actual citrus that you want above the graft - where you can see the trunk change width.

That looks very much like it could be the hard to find lumpy cold hardy citrus Yuzu to me.

yuzu

Yuzu is used like sour lemon juice and often the peel is used in Asian cuisine and is extremely fragrant and super expensive and hard to find up north here. I harvest mine in the winter and cut them up and put them in tea or seafood recipes.

just saw this thread...I have that tree also. ^You will see them sold at farmers market - if you're lucky. Our neighbor who is Italian, told us it's a special type of lemon (similar to Mediterranean lemons) ..it's used a lot in Italy to make the liqueur limoncello..the skin has high content of oil (squeeze it and you know what I mean) and very fragrant. Needless to say, we have a limoncello liqueur after a month-yes, that same neighbor made it! (we gave him two bagfuls of the lemons). Tree produces fruits year-round. Juice is not very sour but with a tinge of sweetness to it.

No these do not look like the Sorrento / Amalfi lemons. The Sfusato Amalfitano, as the name implies, is of tapered shape and not so rough. They do look like Rough lemon as previous posters have said back in 2015.

Certainly not Sorrento/Amalfi lemons. Easy to tell just be looking at the fruit. They certainly look like Rough lemon.
