Plant virus are spread from plant to plant either by rubbing tissues together, spread on contaminated tools, or via certain insects. They are not spread via soil.

It's always helpful to have the first-hand report. (I couldn't find any mention of the virus you mention via an online search.) Perhaps you can point us to it.

Call the extension. The tumbleweeds out in some of the areas have been exceptionally bad and viruses can be transmitted via contaminated plant matter in the soil. It might be bugs spreading it, but my understanding is that the infected tumbleweeds growing and blowing into everything are what is spreading it. If contaminated tumbleweed blows into your garden and you till it in, you've got soil full of the contaminated materials, which will then infect the plants you grow there.

i didn't find this out by online report so you may or may not find one online, I don't know. My grandfather is a retired extension engineer and he took his plants down to the office and talked to whoever is there now. He's the one who passed it onto me and I figured others would want to know.

Found it--it is curly top virus and you're right that it doesn't persist in the soil.
