Brita's Foot Long

Another bean grown for seed, started May 2nd in the greenhouse,
started harvesting dried on the vine seed today Aug 1st. I don't know where the foot
long comes into it as the longest pod harvested so far is 8 3/4 inches
long but this is early days. Has anyone grown longer pods? Salt Spring Seeds list it as almost a foot long, excellent snap, good dry bean.

shared my packet of seed bought in 2010 with another GW member, she
grew it out last year returning to me some lovely fresh seed last fall, thanks Tatianna. This bean grew, flowered, and produced beans in the midst of the heat wave we experienced this year so it's already a winner in my books.

I have grown Brita's several times and I think I remember 10+ inch pods. We never tried it as a snap as we saved them all for use as shellies. It is very fine as a shelly bean.

My experience was similar to Drloyd's. I had very long pods, very few less than 6", and most 8-10", with a few longer than that. Each pod held 8-10 beans, which is a pretty high number for P. vulgaris beans. The pods are very easy to open in shelly stage, and the plants had a high yield.

So far I'm really impressed, harvested a lot more dried on the vine pods tonight, another few days and I can pull the pole. I now have enough seed I won't have to worry about saving seed for a few years. On the other hand Barksdale is not liking the hot weather we've had, planted out the same time as Brita's, healthy vines but just starting to flower now that it's cooled down a bit, where as Brita's have already produce a good crop of beans and now seed. I did shell out a couple of 10" pods tonight :)
